Red Sox make a bold move.

Now for some really important news...

The Boston Red Sox have acquired the right to try to sign Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka to a deal. According to several very knowledgeable sources, Matsuzaka is perhaps the best pitcher Japan has ever produced, and he has the potential to be a thoroughly dominating pitcher in the American Major Leagues.

And for the privilege of just trying to get Matsuzaka to play for Boston, the Red Sox made a bid to pay Matsuzaka's Japanese team a mere $51.1 million. Only if Matsuzaka signs with Boston will that sum be paid.

It's a risky, but definitely bold move.

As for the risk, read this column by Ken Rosenthal. A good part of the risk is that Matsuzaka is represented by Scott Boras, who makes Darth Vader look like a cuddly teddy bear.

Michael Rosenberg has a column entitled "Sox can no longer whine about 'Evil Empire,'" which makes me smile. Red Sox fans don't whine about the Yankees. We definitely bitch, moan, and cuss about the "Evil Empire," but we do not whine.

I guess this means Clemens won't be coming back to Boston.

If the deal falls through, I won't be all that upset. If it falls through, the Sox can take the $51.1 million and spend it elsewhere, and they won't have to deal with Boras.

I read speculation today that the Sox don't really care if they get Matsuzaka or not, they just don't want the Yankees to get him. Boston wants to be the Evil Empire, they aspire to it, they crave it. They will pay $51.1 million plus to buy the title.

Yeah, but up until the last few years, they haven't had the cash to try.

And besides, with Dan Duchette long gone, the Sox have no one nearly as evil as Steinbrenner. ;-)

Bottom of the 9th, 1 out, 2 strikes and no balls.

As much as I hate to admit it, that is funny. :-)

There are still a couple of days left to go, so we'll see what happens.

Scott Boras--what a guy...

On a serious note, do you think The Boss would be willing to pay more than $50 million just to negotiate and then an additional $100 million to sign D-Mat?

As much as I hate to admit it, I didn't mean my previous post to be a double entendre. But, it came out pretty good even if by accident.

I suspect if the Boss paid $51mil just to negotiate, he would make sure it was successful. In time Boston will learn how to be an Evil Empire.
