Memo: Halliburton failed to protect water in Iraq

That's the headline from an AP report published in the Navy Times. Read it and see just how much the company formerly run by Dick Cheney that has received all kinds of huge contracts via the Iraq war really cares about our troops.

Ray, with all due respect, I strongly disagree. When Cheney was CEO, Haliburton was based in Dallas. I lived in Dallas for 19 years and spent the vast majority of my legal career there, and I know very well how big business and government operate together. That is SOP in Dallas, and the "big businesses" there are big time national and global entities. There is no way that Haliburton has not received special treatment from the Bush administration because of its ties to Cheney. And even if Cheney is not culpable for Haliburton's sins, don't you think that he would be in a position to tell the company to get its shit together? Don't you think he would have some responsibility to do that as Vice President (particularly given his prominent role in all Iraq policy) even if he had no ties to Haliburton?

As for why Haliburton hired him, I have an answer: his very high level connections in government which would enable Haliburton to snag huge government contracts. And once he got promoted to Vice President--especially a Vice President with as much power as Cheney--Haliburton had the ultimate inside man. There is evidence for these claims, and I will likely post it later.

Your "formerly governed by Bush" analogy is partly, but not entirely, applicable. I have never been part of Texas government, George Bush was never my boss, and I have never had a close relationship with him. Still, I can tell you that plenty of people from around the country have expressed scorn and a bit of blame for Bush when they find out I am from Texas, so there is some validity to your analogy.

Ray, this is off topic, but expect a post today on which we can both agree. Let's just say I might join you as a Giants fan in the fall.
