Dave from Tulsa on why the t.o. signing is a bad deal.
One of my sports links is Bob's Blog, which belongs to Bob Sturm of radio station KTCK (The Ticket) in Dallas. There are few things I miss about living in Dallas, and The Ticket is one. Anyway, Bob is a great radio host, and he has a great blog. It is Dallas-intensive, so it might not be for everyone, but if you want to know what's going on with Dallas and Texas sports, soccer, the NHL, and a few other sporting items, check out Bob's Blog.
As you might guess, the t.o. signing has been a regular topic there lately. Apparently, I am far from alone in being disgusted over Jerry's latest big deal. And yet there are plenty of Cowboys fans who take exception to such disgust. Bob posted an email from a most insightful guy from Tulsa named Dave who has this to say in response:
Go Giants.

Bob,Right on, Dave.
I read the listener email you posted on your Wednesday blog blasting those Cowboy fans who are against the Owens signing because he is such a team-destroying turd. The common thread in all of these email is that winning is the only thing that should matter to “true” fans and that no “true” fan would ever drop his/her allegiance over a player signing that helped the team win.
These people are either amoral or hypocrites. If the Cowboys signed Charles Manson to be the coach or Osama bin Laden to play wideout, would they still be undying fans of the team, even if these two guys would make the team better? If they say “yes,” then they are amoral morons who should not be entrusted with sharp objects. On the other hand, if they say “no,” then they obviously have some line at which their blind fandom ends and some level of self-respect begins. They thus are being hypocritical when they say “true” fans stick with their teams no matter what.
The bottom line is that there are right ways and wrong ways to do things. To many Cowboys fans, getting in bed with the football and team sports devil is the wrong way to win. Jim Reeves had it right: fans like to feel good about themselves and about their team. It is very hard, perhaps impossible, to feel good [about] Terrell Owens.

I hope that I don't jynx the Giants, and I can assure you I will be rooting for them in earnest.
"Seriously, is about the fans or is it about the owner?"
Both. By Landry's last few years, Cowboys fans had gotten SO spoiled (and that's on top of the basic Dallas attitude). It was just assumed that the Cowboys would be among the best every year (and they were for so long). Landry's last two seasons and Jimmy's first two made Cowboys fans face reality. After that, the fans really got better. However, now I simply don't know what to make of Cowboys fans who think having t.o. is the greatest thing since sliced bread.
And then there's Jerry. I thought he had finally developed a little class. Fool me once...
"I would rather root for a mediocre team than one who sold its soul to the devil just to win."
I hear ya...
"I know, how can I root for the Yankees."
Steinbrenner would be more likely to try to buy the devil. :-) Seriously, I don't know if Steinbrenner would take on someone like t.o. I think he has more sense than that, and besides, he would never permit any player to upstage himself in the ego department.
On another Yankees note, could you just imagine if Billy Martin was alive and the coach of the Cowboys?
