Congratulations, Steelers!

The Steelers defeated the Seahawks 21-10. I'm genuinely happy for Bill Cowher and Jerome Bettis, but as a Cowboys fan, I cannot be really happy. Well, at least the one Super Bowl defeat of the Steelers came courtesy of the Cowboys.

Here were the key plays:
  1. The 3rd and 28 play in the 2nd quarter from the Seattle 40 in which Ben Roethlisberger floated a pass caught by Hines Ward at the 3. The Seattle secondary really blew it on that one, and that play changed the whole game. Up to that point, Seattle had completely controlled the game.
  2. The touchdown pass in the 4th quarter from Antwaan Randle El to Hines Ward. Did no one in Seattle watch the Pittsburgh-Cincinnati playoff game? Unbelievable. That being said, it was a perfectly called and executed play, included a key block from Roethlisberger. It completely took the momentum away from Seattle and gave the Steelers a big lead.
  3. The 3rd and 6 play by Pittsburgh from their 24 in the 4th quarter. That play enabled the Steelers to run precious time off the clock.
Perhaps other plays were just as important (like Darrell Jackson's unnecessary pass interference, Willie Parker's long TD run, and Hasselbeck's interception in the 4th quarter), but I think the three listed above were the most important ones. Seattle gave up the big plays on defense, and anytime they came up with a big play, they committed a penalty.

Bottom line: the Steelers made the big plays, the Steelers made fewer mistakes, and the Seahawks gave up big plays and committed penalties at really bad times.

"the Steelers made the big plays"... with a little help from the officiating crew. That first Steeler touchdown was very questionable, even the official who called it initially hesitated. And the blocking call against Hasselbeck on that interception when he was clearly going for a legal tackle was a bad call. Both of those seemed to deflate the Seahawks.

But, overall a very exciting game to watch since it could have gone either way up until the last few minutes. And even then the Seahawks could have pulled off a miracle.

You are right about both those officiating calls. The call on Hasselbeck was particularly mystifying. The ref said it was a "block below the waist." I always thought a block was made by the team with the ball. Moreover, the hit was not below the waist.

And I forgot to mention the terrible job of clock management by Seattle at the end of the first half. If they had not wasted at least 30 seconds, maybe the field goal attempt would have been from 40 instead of 50, and maybe the score at halftime would have been 7-6 with Seattle having all the momentum.

If the Seahawks had stopped the Steelers on the third play I cited, the game would have been much more exciting because the Seahawks would have had the ball with almost five minutes instead of just under two. Even so, I agree it was a good game to watch.
